Two killed in Oakland crash on Interstate 880 after wrong-way driver collides with vehicle

Two killed in Interstate 880 crash

A car crash on Interstate 880 claimed the lives of two women early Saturday morning in Oakland, California, SF Gate reports.

At around 4:15 a.m., police officials received several calls about a wrong-way driver, who was driving with the lights turned off. Just five minutes later, a call came in about a collision between a Honda Civic and a Nissan Maxima near the Broadway off-ramp.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Matthew Hamer says that the drivers, who were the only occupants in their vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identified the drivers as 23-year-old Jennifer Huezo Ruiz, of San Leandro, and Joel Hutchinson, 26, of Oakland, according to KRON 4.

Due to the severity of the wreckage, officers were unable to determine which driver was driving the wrong-way on I-880, but an investigation is ongoing.
